The 2013 Academy Award Winners
2013’s movie awards season came to a close with the 85th Oscars in Hollywood today. The monumental industry back-slap spread the kudos far and wide – Argo, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Lincoln and Life of Pi all scoring big.
Life of Pi took the most awards with four, including Best Director for Ang Lee – his second having previously won for Brokeback Mountain.
Meanwhile, Daniel Day-Lewis – winning Best Lead Actor for Lincoln – matched Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson’s records for the most acting Oscars ever won (three), and became the only thespian to ever win three Lead Acting awards.
At age 22 (and 193 days), Jennifer Lawrence became the second-youngest Lead Actress winner ever for her role in Silver Linings Playbook. She beat out the youngest-ever Lead Actress nominee Quvenzhane Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) and the oldest-ever Emmanuelle Riva (Amour).
But it was Argo that took the top gong, the first Best Picture winner without a director nomination (for Ben Affleck) since 1989’s Driving Miss Daisy.
