Guard the silver: here’s the trailer and release date for Teen Wolf: The Movie
It’s a title guaranteed to make any member of Generation X feel their age. “But Teen Wolf was already a movie!” they might say while taking a break from pinpointing exactly when Eddie Vedder sold out. And that’s true—there was the 1985 Michael J. Fox vehicle Teen Wolf, followed by the less-than-loved Teen Wolf Too (starring Jason Bateman—Fox jumped ship) in 1987, with a pretty lacklustre Saturday morning cartoon sandwiched in between.
But then there was the YA drama series Teen Wolf, which ran from 2011-2017. And its follow-up, Teen Wolf: The Movie, is hitting Paramount+ on January 26.
A moody supernatural drama rather than the teen comedy of the source material, Teen Wolf followed the adventures of highschooler Scott McCall (Tyler Posey), who found his already-complicated life even more fraught after being bitten by a werewolf and becoming his hometown’s de facto protector from a whole variety of supernatural threats (like Buffy’s Sunnydale, Teen Wolf’s Beacon Hills is a nexus for spooky doin’s) over six seasons.
Teen Wolf: The Movie picks up a number of years after the series finale. Plot details are being as closely guarded as the family silver, but we do know that Crystal Reed is returning as Allison Argent, Scott’s first love. She was killed in season three but is now back, apparently taking up her family’s trade of werewolf hunting and serving as the villain of the film.
Also returning are Tyler Hoechlin as hunky werewolf Derek Hale, Colton Haynes as bully-turned-buddy Jackson Whittemore, and Shelley Hennig as werecoyote Malia Tate, plus many more familiar faces making what could well be their final appearance in the Wolfiverse. Series creator Jeff Davis is on script duties and Highlander’s Russell Mulcahy is directing, which means it’ll look the business. The whole thing sounds like a howling good time to us…see you at the full moon?
