News: White Lies on Road to Oscars, NZ Premiere of Mr. Pip and more

White Lies (Tuakiri Huna), the New Zealand Film Commission funded Maori language feature film written and directed by Dana Rotberg, has been submitted as the official New Zealand entry for consideration for Best Foreign Language film for the 86th Academy Awards. This news coincides with the movie’s premiere in Toronto, playing in three sold-out sessions in the film festival.

We found a lot to like in the three-actress period drama (which is still playing in cinemas), saying “Whirimako Black is a revelation in her first film role, while Rachel House (Whale Rider) does the heavy emotional lifting and a porcelain and prim Antonia Prebble (TV’s The Blue Rose) does terse and tragic with equal aplomb.”

World Premiere of Mr. Pip

Kiwi filmmaker Andrew Adamson (Shrek) premiered his latest film in Auckland last night, the Hugh Laurie-led drama Mr. Pip set in 1990s Papua New Guinea. Mr. Pip opens in cinemas Thursday, October 3rd.
