Is this the starriest cast of the year? Amsterdam trailer and release date
“This is turning out to be a lot larger than any of us”, a black-haired Margot Robbie worries in the trailer below for David O. Russell’s upcoming film Amsterdam.
Um, yeah. With a staggering list of star names emblazoned on the movie’s poster, Robbie is about right: she’s joined by Christian Bale and John David Washington as the lead trio of Amsterdam, hitting cinemas on November 4. Much like American Hustle, it seems we’re getting a fabulously cast caper set in the dark depths of US history.
Here we go with that tremendous cast: Chris Rock, Anya-Taylor Joy, Zoe Saldana, Mike Myers, Michael Shannon, Timothy Olyphant, Andrea Riseborough, Taylor Swift, Matthias Schoenaerts, Alessandro Nivola, Robert De Niro and Rami Malek. Phew.
Those are some very famous, recognisable faces—except for Timothy Olyphant, who looks totally unlike himself as a sinister shape in the trailer. It’s too soon to tell which side of the law each of these characters will represent, bouncing around in a lavishly realised 1930s period setting.
Bale, Washington, and Robbie are “two soldiers and a nurse in Amsterdam”, now seemingly being framed for a white man’s murder. Bale’s distinctive glass eye gets them accused of the crime and there aren’t many groups of friends bouncing around the city that look like the hunted trio.
Aside from Damien Chazelle’s upcoming Old Hollywood drama Babylon (which will also include Margot Robbie), this must be the most stacked, exciting cast list of the year. Russell tends to attract those, even despite his disturbing actions behind-the-scenes.
“The cuckoo’s in the nest, and the cuckoo’s about to be trapped”, Mike Myers urges our main characters in the trailer above. If you loved Taylor Swift acting as part of a star ensemble in Cats but wished every single other thing about the movie was different, you might go cuckoo for Amsterdam.
