What is Squid Game season 2 about?

The series revolves around a secret and deadly competition that sees 456 desperately impoverished players engage in a series of children’s games, with frequently fatal results for the losers. Having won last season, gambling addict Seong Gi-hun returns some three years later to play once more, again teaming up with undercover cop Hwang Jun-ho, but this time aiming to end the Squid Game forever. Will they succeed? Depends on whether the powers that be fancy a third season, we guess…

The cast of Squid Game season 2

Lee Jung-jae, recently seen in Disney’s Star Wars: The Acolyte, is Seong Gi-hun; Wi Ha-joon is undercover cop Hwang Jun-ho; Lee Byung-hun is the mysterious and malevolent Front Man, who orchestrates the Game; and Gong Yoo is a nameless salesman who recruits participants, all reprising their roles from the first season. Newcomers this outing include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won Ji-an.

It’s the follow up to one of the best and most popular series of the 21st century—how could we not be? Of course, it may prove to be too much of a good thing—plenty of genuinely great works have faltered trying to do the same trick twice—but it’s surely worth a punt.
