We thought the new Planet of the Apes series was done and dusted with War of the Planet of the Apes, which seemed to put a neat button on the saga of freedom-fighting chimp Caesar (Andy “mocap man” Sirkis). But lo, a new trilogy has hovered into view. Guess they finally made a monkey out of us.

What is Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes about?
Set several generations after the events of the previous film, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes follows young chimp Noa, a member of a peaceful tribe of apes, as he comes into conflict with a more militant clan ruled by the despotic Proximus Caesar. Much like the 1968 OG movie, it’s set in a post-apocalyptic world where we no longer spank the monkey, the monkey spanks us, to quote Kevin Smith. While the now-intelligent apes struggle to create a new order from the ashes of the old world, humanity has been reduced to a roaming troop of mute brutes. However, a monkey wrench is thrown into the works when Noa encounters feral hottie Nova, who can talk (but not sing, as yet, but let’s cross our fingers for the inevitable sequels).
The cast of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
Owen Teague, familiar from IT, is Noa; The Witcher’s Freya Allen is Nova (real name Mae); the ubiquitous and always welcome Kevin Durand is Proximus Caesar; Aussie actor Travis Jeffrey is ape amigo Anaya; The Orville‘s Peter Macon is wise orangutan Raka; William H. Macy is human turncoat Trevathan; and Lydia Peckham, Neil Sandilands, Eka Darville as Sylva, Ras-Samuel Weld A’abzgi, Sara Wiseman, and Dichen Lachman round out the cast. This one comes to us from director Wes Ball, who previously helmed the Maze Runner movies, films that you’ve definitely heard someone say are “pretty good, actually” (they are).
