What is I Am: Celine Dion about?
We’d have thought that was fairly self-explanatory, but this offering differs from the usual rank-and-file music doco—and Dion has been the subject of a fair few of those already, not to mention the recent feature film Aline, which is a loose adaptation of her life and career.
Directed by the Academy Award-nominated documentarian Irene Taylor Brodsky (Hear and Now, Beware the Slenderman), I Am: Celine Dion charts the beloved singer’s rise to fame and fortune from humble beginnings (the youngest of 14 kids, she slept in a drawer as a baby like something out of a Little Orphan Annie cartoon) to being a legitimate global megastar. But that aside, it also covers her 2022 diagnosis with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS), which is a sort of funny name for a really horrible condition—and one that forced her to cancel her highly anticipated new Las Vegas residency.
Speaking about the film, Dion noted, “This last couple of years has been such a challenge for me, the journey from discovering my condition to learning how to live with and manage it, but not to let it define me. As the road to resuming my performing career continues, I have realised how much I have missed it, of being able to see my fans. During this absence, I decided I wanted to document this part of my life, to try to raise awareness of this little-known condition, to help others who share this diagnosis.”
