What is Bad Monkey about?
Based on the 2013 novel of the same name by top notch Floridian crime writer Carl Hiaasen, Bad Monkey follows detective-turned health inspector (he’s suspended for slugging someone who richly deserved it) Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn), who makes the unfortunate mistake of doing a favour for his cop bestie, Rogelio Burton (John Ortiz).
The favour is transporting a severed arm some poor fisherman hauled out of the Everglades to the Miami-Dade medical examiner. Said arm turns out to be formerly attached to a wealthy medical supply magnate, and his wife doesn’t seem as upset as circumstances clearly demand. Is something rotten in the state of Florida? You betcha. Will our dogged but disgraced detective get to the bottom of it? Again, you betcha.

The so money Vince Vaughn is Andrew Yancy; John Ortiz is his cop mate, Rogelio Burton; Kiss Kiss Bang Bang‘s Michelle Monaghan is Bonnie Witt, our man’s girlfriend; Dune‘s Jodie Turner-Smith is the Dragon Queen, an Obeah priestess, because Hiaasen books are really weird; Meredith Hagner is Eve Stripling, the bereaved; Natalie Martinez is medical examiner Rosa Campesino; and Rob Delaney, L. Scott Caldwell, and Ronald Peet round out the cast. And Zach Braff gets a cameo at some point. If we’re right about which character he’s playing, it’s a funny one.

Why we’re excited about Bad Monkey
That Bill Lawrence knows how to mix comedy and drama to good effect, and Carl Hiaasen is one of those writers whose lack of screen adaptations is frankly baffling. This promises to be an absolute hoot.
