Barbara Streisand directs, co-writes and leads this romantic musical drama, playing Yentl, a woman who disguises herself as a man so she can pursue Jewish studies and falls in love in the process.
Women in 1900s Poland are forbidden to learn scripture, but Yentl’s father tutors her in secret. After he dies, Yentl wishes to continue her studies, but the gender barrier remains. Undeterred, she fashions a disguise and enrols in religious college, but soon develops an attraction to fellow student Avigdor (Mandy Patinkin).
Based on a short story by Nobel Prize winner Isaac Bashevis Singer, Yentl garnered a Best Director Golden Globe for Streisand, making her the first woman ever to receive the award (and the only woman until Chloé Zhao won in 2021 for Nomadland).
