Classic, Cannes-winning and Oscar-nominated Japanese allegorical drama, based on the novel by Kôbô Abe. A stranded entomologist (Eiji Okada) is offered sanctuary with a young widow (Kyôko Kishida) in a rundown hut at the bottom of a large sandpit, accessible only by a rope ladder. He soon finds that he is trapped with the woman, who busies herself shovelling sand off her house.
