In this Palme d’Or-nominated drama, many residents of Timbuktu have fled with the city coming under the control of Jihadist fundamentalists. Kidane (Ibrahim Ahmed) and his wife Satima (Toulou Kiki) remain, living in an open tent with their daughter and an orphaned boy, as armed Jihadis impose their prohibitions and presence while armed to the teeth. With longstanding traditions challenged, and Timbuktu transformed into a place of bigotry and fear, all it takes is a single confrontation to set off a tragedy that the fledging theocracy will struggle to address.
