This '80s "timeless family adventure" takes on a more frightening tone thanks to the knowledge that many untrained lions were used during production, seriously injuring 70 cast and crew members - including the husband-wife-daughter cast of Tippi Hedren, Noel Marshall and Melanie Griffith. The film is set for a revival thanks to a 2016 release from Drafthouse Films.
Want the gruesome details? They include: cinematographer Jan de Bont losing his scalp (220 stitches); Hedren got herself a broken leg and a lion bite to the neck (38 stitches); Griffith got bit also (50 stitches); while Marshall was bitten so often he was eventually diagnosed with gangrene.
The film's disastrous production was also plagued by flood, fire and disease. The 11-year ordeal was a labour of love for Hedren. a wildlife activist.
