The 1968 sci-fi classic about a crew of astronauts (including Charlton Heston) stranded on a strange planet where primitive humans are enslaved by a race of talking, thinking, upright apes.
Unable to comprehend this backwards world, Taylor (Heston) breaks free from his captors' cage and fights back. When it's discovered he can talk, ape leader Dr Zaius (Maurice Evans) is disgusted and demands he be killed. But sympathetic scientists attempt to protect him and discover the mystery of their planet’s origins - a secret guarded by Zaius and his comrades. Ultimately it’s Taylor who finds the truth, emitting the immortal line: "Damn you! Damn you! Damn you all to hell!"
Planet of the Apes spawned four sequels, a TV show and two movie reboots – Tim Burton’s in 2001 and the 2011 prequel Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It’s based on the novel by Pierre Boulle who also wrote Bridge on the River Kwai.
