Based on the bestselling novel by Ge Shuiping, Larry Yang's second feature is a both a love story and a melodrama condemning human intolerance.
"In a remote mountain village, recent immigrant La Hong (Ailei Yu) dies after stepping on explosives that young villager Han Chong (Ziyi Wang) set-up to catch a badger. The elders of the village force Han Chong to care for La Hong's mute wife Hong Xia (Yueting Lang) instead of reporting the case to the police. The conflict between the villagers and the widow Qin Hua (Jin Guo), who envies their relationship continues to increase as Han Chong’s attraction toward Hong Xia grows.
"The crucial motif of the film is 'secrets' centered on a remote mountain village that is so secluded that villagers can hide the death of La Hong. Along with Hong Xia’s past, the secrets of her impairment and how she came to the village with La Hong are systematically revealed in the last half of the film. The love between Han Chong and Hong Xia is also kept hidden and how their love deepens is another point to ponder in this film." (Busan International Film Festival)
