In her final year of school, Josie Alibrandi (Pia Miranda) runs into a car-crash of social problems. Her relationship with her single mother (Greta Scacchi) is on the rocks, she's copping racial slurs from a fellow student, two different boys present two different romantic woes, and her absent father (Anthony LaPaglia) suddenly appears in Josie's life. Fortunately, her Nonna (Elena Cotta) is always by her side.
