The story of Angel Deverall, who lives in a flat above her mother’s grocery store but sustains a fiction that she is to the manor born and bound for glory as a famous author. Her utter self-belief enables her to achieve her unlikely ambitions – before long she has bought the house she pretends to own – but we soon find out that Angel is no angel.
Made in the style of the MGM screen sagas of the late 1930s, the film is a Technicolor costume drama with an old-fashioned sense of shooting and editing, a ‘sumptuous’ musical score and fine costumes.
