Werewolf by Night (October 7)
Billed as a “special presentation” rather than a proper Marvel film or series, this black-and-white, horror-flavoured super-story has a few key elements going for it. It’s composer Michael Giacchino’s directorial debut, so at the very least the music should be fabulous; Gael García Bernal gets hairy as the transformative (and ridiculously named) Jack Russell; and it’ll introduce a new batch of ever stranger heroes and villains into the MCU. Watch it before Halloween unless you’re happy to get its spooky secrets spoiled by Marvel nerds online.
Rosaline (October 14)
Poor Rosaline gets done dirty in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet: unceremoniously dumped by Romeo as soon as his eyes land on (her cousin!!) that Capulet lass, she never appears on stage. Until now, in this fresh take starring the fearless Kaitlyn Dever, who seems a bit more pragmatic than those lovestruck heroes. “That is quite possibly the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard”, she says of Juliet’s plan to fake her death—the impending tragedy should only sharpen the period comedy.
Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi (October 26)
George Lucas’ galaxy far far away has always had its biblical undertones: a battle between clearly defined good and evil factions, an unseen ‘force’ that moves believers, wise beardy robed dudes making prophecies in the desert, etc. This animated series of Star Wars ‘parables’ takes those themes further, letting us see key episodes in the moral development of Ahsoka (good guy) and Count Dooku (bad boy). Heroes and villains aren’t born: they’re made, and then animated into epic lightsaber battles for our pleasure.
