Avatar: The Way of Water (June 7)
Let’s see if James Cameron’s blockbuster gamble has the same impact on a much smaller screen, eh? With its bladder-punishing runtime and continuing themes of ecological and cultural conservation, the Avatar sequel went bigger and better than the 2009 original in a few ways. Firstly, Sam Worthington’s jarhead hero is better performed here, with less white saviour material and more compelling family drama. Secondly, the patiently-paced middle section of the film triumphs by just giving us a CG showcase of glorious aquatic alien life. I know some viewers hated it and just wanted to cut to the action, but for me the big bombastic climax is so well-earned because of the elegiac second-act stretch. That’s just the way of water, baby.
Flamin’ Hot (June 9)
Bloody everything is getting a behind-the-scenes product origin story these days: Tetris, Air Jordans, the Blackberry phone. Do we need a rags-to-riches tale of the Mexican-American janitor who dared to add street food flavour to his boss’s forgotten chips? Hopefully this biopic is just as spicy as the Cheetos in question, with actor Eva Longoria directing and Tony Shalhoub as a PepsiCo CEO. Finger-lickin’ creative non-fiction.
The Full Monty: Limited Series (June 14)
You can leave your hat on for this sequel series to the uplifting British hit, with stars Robert Carlyle, Mark Addy and more returning to strip down one more time. It’s unlikely material for a zingy episodic tribute 25 years down the track, as the original script spelled out a disastrous fate for the economically and socially traumatised working class guys who dared to put on a male strip revue. Still, with the original film achieving a stunning box office result of $250 million internationally from a measly $3.5 million budget, another underdog feat is not out of the question.
