Abbott Elementary (June 1)
Already hailed as a possible successor to the mighty comedy throne of The Office, Abbott Elementary is about as low-concept as a half-hour workplace comedy can be. It’s created by comedian Quinta Brunson, who also stars as a dedicated teacher at a poorly funded Philadelphia school.
Brunson is a vibrant talent, and so is Tyler James Williams, who you’ll recognise from Everybody Hates Chris and Dear White People. Now’s the time to get in on the ground floor for this charming workplace series, which will only reveal more colour, character, and laughs as it settles into its own thing—beyond the bounds of the somewhat-tired mockumentary format.
Down With Love (June 17)
A charmingly ribald homage to the Doris Day/Rock Hudson sex comedies of the 1960s, Down With Love is a completely underrated rom-com, starring Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor in a retro battle of the sexes.
Director Peyton Reed uses witty framing, period production design, and gut-busting cliches to mock gender relations both then and now. Some cast highlights include Sarah Paulson and David Hyde Pierce as the mismatched “B-couple” storyline: they’re both so gay-coded and delightful to watch.
Only Murders In The Building: Season 2 (June 28)
This true-crime comedy was one of last year’s most pleasant surprises, relying on the dependable chemistry of best buds Steve Martin and Martin Short, plus Selena Gomez as their unexpected Gen Z companion. The trio of neighbours are all a bit too involved in a recent murder mystery, ending up getting themselves in hot water by the end of those charming episodes.
We already know that Gomez will hunch over a dead body, thanks to a season one cliffhanger: that the new pals will be accused by everyone else in the apartment building of murder: and that a rival true-crime podcast will spring up to sling some more mud. Can this unusual friendship survive further calamity and crimes? Yeah, probably.
