Top picks
Somebody I Used To Know (February 10)
Dave Franco and Alison Brie are one of those adorable Hollywood couples you kinda forget are together, but here they team up to tell a story of loss—lost love, and lost self-identity. Brie stars as a workaholic who retreats to her hometown after a professional disaster, and Franco directs her through the drama and mess of what happens next. Her rekindled romance with first love Jay Ellis is thrown into question when she learns he’s engaged to a bright young woman who reminds her of “somebody she used to know”: her younger self. We hope that the thoughtful rom-com wraps up with Brie falling back in love with herself, rather than stealing away someone else’s man.
The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It (February 11)
Based on the dubious demon-hunting history of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, The Conjuring’s string of jumpscare-laden spooky movies stays relevant thanks to the genuine chemistry between its two leads. Honestly, there’s a sweet period romance at the heart of Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga’s work here, even as they’re getting possessed and seeing horrifying infernal visions. Again based on weird “true” events, the third film in the franchise follows the married couple’s attempts to exonerate a murderer with a satanic alibi. The scary morgue and forest sequences are almost outdone by the very cute romantic ending IMO.
The Consultant: Season 1 (February 24)
Christoph Waltz gets back into slick creep mode, “offering a very simple service” at the new business he’s been hired to improve, for this office-set thriller series. Co-starring Nat Wolff, it’s based on a 2015 novel about the complex transaction that goes on between bosses and their underlings, but what goes on at this gaming company should be a bit more exciting than open-office plans and casual-dress Fridays. The employees will wind up fighting for their lives in the name of progress, so we can’t wait to see what Waltz has planned for them.
