It’s A Wonderful Life (December 1)

Amidst the eggnog-treacle of Hallmark Christmas movies arriving on Prime from December first, there are at least two stone-cold holiday classics: David Bowie’s POW drama Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence, and this, the absolute best Christmas movie of all time. A kind of reverse Scrooge story, Jimmy Stewart has never been more empathetic as a fundamentally decent man who has good reason to believe his loving family and supportive community would be better off if he were dead. The sweetest seasonal romance; the most loveable side-characters; the most cathartic, heart-swelling ending.

Three Pines: Season 1 (December 2)

Alfred Molina has brought a sense of scruffy empathy to just about every role he takes on, from a tragic Spider-Man villain to a coked-up spectacular side character in Boogie Nights. In this TV adaptation of Louise Penny’s novels, he’s Chief Inspector Armand Gamache: the kind of detective who notices those pesky details others tend to overlook.

The eight episodes of this hearty mystery series take place in a remote Quebec town, so Molina’s investigator will have to bounce between French and English to solve the central murder case—not to mention digging up ghosts from his own past, as telly cops tend to do.

Your Christmas Or Mine? (December 2)

A bunch of fresh and formulaic rom-coms arrive on Amazon’s platform this month, and Your Christmas or Mine? isn’t even the only holiday-themed one. But it looks like the pick of the litter, with Asa Butterfield and Cora Kirk as a mixed-up young couple. Both of them make the spontaneous, romantic decision to follow each other home for Christmas…meaning they each end up spending the season separately, with one another’s wacky families. Secrets will be uncovered, new holiday traditions will bamboozle the couple, and they might end up learning a thing or two about each other.
