About The Gate, Picturehouse London
Contact & About
If you like your films with added history, The Gate is the one for you. How many cinemas do you know that once housed a brothel? That was back when this 19th-century building was a hotel and before it became the Electric Palace cinema in 1911 – and it’s been showing films in London’s lively Notting Hill ever since, under various names.
These days the single screen combines beautiful Edwardian architectural touches with largely current releases, from summer blockbusters to arthouse indies and documentaries. Expect the usual Picturehouse quality in terms of film choice, technical quality and, crucially, the drinks and snacks served in the cosy foyer cafe.
