A slate quarry town in Snowdonia National Park plays host to this resourceful initiative, a smartly appointed cinema, bar and hostel in an old police station and courtroom. Work began on transforming the Edwardian building in 2007, while the independent cinema opened in 2016. The project was steered by youth-training enterprise Gwallgofiaid, which channels profits into education schemes. New releases, arthouse films and imaginative specials dominate the programme, while Gwallgofiaid’s innovative thinking extended to some smart responses to lockdown. A second screen was opened in the upstairs courtroom, with flexible seating adapted to the challenges of social distancing. One famous supporter is film star Rhys Ifans, who joined Zoom sessions for Welsh-language youth club Clwb Clinc during the Covid pandemic.
